President Pascual to UPLB Graduate School: intensify internationalization of programs

UP President Alfredo E. Pascual enjoined the UPLB graduate education faculty to intensify the internationalization of graduate programs during the Graduate Faculty Conference on Feb. 15 at the Tagaytay International Convention Center.
Pascual, who gave the keynote speech during the Conference, said that UP’s mandate as a research, graduate, and regional/global university are intertwined and interrelated.
He also commended UPLB’s tradition of excellence as a graduate and research university, especially in agriculture, forestry, veterinary medicine, and biotechnology.
Meanwhile, Chancellor Fernando C. Sanchez, Jr. reiterated UPLB’s oneness with the UP System on its pursuit to becoming a great university. Amid internationalization efforts, particularly at the graduate level, Chancellor Sanchez reminded that nationalism should remain within the focus of UPLB.
UP vice presidents Dr. Gisela P. Concepcion (academic affairs) and Dr. J. Prospero E. De Vera III (public affairs) discussed the roles of and opportunities for UP faculty and UP public service, respectively, in the light of internationalization. UP Diliman Chancellor Michael L. Tan, for his part, discussed the importance of the interdisciplinary approach in University academic affairs and administration.
Guest speaker Dr. David Hall, chief of party of the United States Agency for International Development-Science, Technology, Research and Innovation (USAID- STRIDE) discussed innovations in graduate programs while Dr. Fabian Dayrit, chemistry professor at the Ateneo de Manila University and chair of the National Science Consortium of the Department of Science and Technology, talked about graduate student mentoring.
During the Conference that had the theme “Responding to the Challenges of a Research and Graduate University,” the participants reexamined the mandates, potentials, and opportunities of UPLB graduate education in view of the implementation of the UP Charter of 2008 and the unfolding of the ASEAN Integration 2015.
The event, organized by the UPLB Graduate School, was also attended by UP System and UPLB officials, UP Manila Chancellor Carmencita Padilla and National Scientist Dolores Ramirez. (MJE Gloria)
