University of the Philippines Los Baños

The University town in itself is akin to where residents’ needs can be easily met. Clustered in strategic spots are dormitories for students and guests. Take your pick from the scenery you would like to greet you every day - the wide open spaces of the athletic field and the Freedom Park at the lower campus, or the grandeur and magnificence of the towering trees at the forestry or upper campus.

Need to take a stroll after bingeing on Filipino food at the University Food Service? The athletic field, or the EB Copeland Gym beckons.

To monitor your weight and other vital stats, or for your overall health needs, just a few meters up the hill to forestry campus is the University Health Service.

Or just need people to exchange ideas with? There are course-related and socio-civic organizations in the campus, or for the foreign students, the International Students Association that you can be members of.

If you need someone to talk to, welcoming and friendly counselors are available at the Office of Student Affairs. Coming here with your school-age children? There are good primary and secondary schools just a few minutes’ drive from the central campus. UPLB itself maintains the UP Rural High School as a teaching laboratory for its BS Math and Science Teaching students.

Living in the lower campus connects you to the green athletic field and the DL Umali Freedom Park. You may join the people – jogging, briskwalking, taking a leisurely stroll, throwing and catching discs, backheeling, kicking and scoring a goal – and families enjoying the simple pleasure of the outdoors.

Going up the upper (Forestry) campus connects you to nature itself - with the cicadas’ songs at night, the split second glimpse of a colorful bird, the rich biodiversity beneath your feet, and definitely the fresh air of the mountains.

Various amenities are available for UPLB personnel and students alike. On hilly portions of the campus are staff housing units that are provided to qualified University personnel. Graduate students who bring their families with them to live inside or in the vicinity of UPLB for the duration of their studies can send their preschool-age children to the Child Development Laboratory for socialization and early instruction.

Qualified secondary level-age students meanwhile can go to the UP Rural High School to be trained for a possible college course in science and technology. UPLB constituents, personnel and students alike, may also avail themselves of medical procedures at the University Health Service. And so can their pets at the Companion Animal Clinic of the College of Veterinary Medicine.

Large group meetings and functions may be held at the Seniors’ Social Garden.

For those who prefer to live off-campus, private dormitories, hostels, and apartments are just within a few minutes’ walk from the UPLB campus. You can go around in motorbikes, bikes, or cars. You may also flag down a jeepney to take you to your destination within or outside the camp.

To facilitate financial transactions, at least four banks are located inside the campus. Right outside are restaurants to satisfy your gastronomic curiousity or craving for food from other cultures such as Italian, Japanese, Korean, Vietnam, Thailand and others. But if you are not feeling adventurous, a number of fastfood outlets are right outside the campus gates.

Right outside the main entrance to the campus is a commercial district called “Grove” where one can get just about anything – slow and fast food fare, school supplies, cooking and grocery supplies, clothes, as well as services laundry, photocopying and bookbinding, and travel and Internet. Name it, Grove has it!
