Senate Majority Floor Leader Alan Peter S. Cayetano visited UPLB on Feb. 6 to discuss the Republic Act No. 10648 or the “Iskolar ng Bayan Act 2014” among Los Baños youth.
Iskolar ng Bayan Act 2014 exempts the top 10 graduates of public high schools from entrance examination, tuition and other fees in state universities and colleges in the Philippines, with the exception of the UP. The discussion held at the EE Auditorium was attended by students from Los Baños National High School and from UPLB.
Sen. Cayetano, who authored RA 10648, addressed concerns about it and other issues concerning Philippine education. He also advocated the use of social media among the students in expressing their needs and concerns to the government.
Sen. Cayetano is no stranger to UPLB. Prior to pursuing a bachelor’s degree in political science from UP Diliman, he was once an undergraduate student at UPLB.
The University Student Council, CEAT Student Council, Sigma Rho Fraternity, and Sigma Alpha Nu Sorority coordinated the event. Chancellor Fernando C. Sanchez, Jr.; Dr. Portia G. Lapitan, vice chancellor for academic affairs; Prof. Rex B. Demafelis, vice chancellor for research and extension; and Allen Lemence, USC chair, attended the event. (MJE Gloria)
