The College of Agriculture’s Corn-based Farmer Scientist RDE Training Program or FSTP was awarded at this year’s Gawad Pangulo: Award for Excellence in Public Service held at the Executive House in UP Diliman, Quezon City on Jan 30.
UP President Alfredo E. Pascual presented the award to the FSTP team headed by Dr. Romulo G. Davide, FSTP program leader.
The theme of the awards is “Galing UP, Lingkod Bayan” and aims to recognize UP individuals and institutions whose public service works embody honor and excellence.
FSTP was initially conceptualized in 1994 by Dr. Davide to address poverty among highland farmers in Cebu. In essence, the program aims to connect farmers to agricultural scientists and receive training to improve their scientific and technical capabilities to grow corn and other food crops using appropriate farming technologies.
From 2009 to 2015, FSTP has covered 31 provinces and 64 municipalities, helping farms to become more productive through training programs aimed at increasing agriculture productivity, inculcating values, and honing entrepreneurship. Corn farmers have increased their harvest from 0.1 tons to 4-7 tons per hectare.
Dr. Davide, a professor emeritus at UPLB, was given the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 2012 for his work and accomplishments in implementing the FSTP.
