The UPLB Economics Society brings you ECONVERGENCE, an annual inter-high school scholastic economic convention that aims to promote economics through the analysis of relevant social issues in the country.
For the past eleven years, ECONVERGENCE has been well participated by various high schools nationwide. The various competitions in ECONVERGENCE have served as avenues for students to showcase their skills and knowledge in the application of economic concepts. In addition, Econvergence has served as a platform for enhancing the teaching of economics through its Economic Forum, an event held in partnership with the Department of Economics (DE) of the College of Economics and Management, UPLB.
This year, ECONVERGENCE 2017 will focus on the theme: "Addressing Regional Economic Disparity: Assessing Federalism as Avenue for an Inclusive Economy". The event will held on 4-5 February 2017 at the BP International-Makiling, University of the Philippines Los Baños, Laguna.
There are 19 participating schools namely, Ateneo High School, Batangas State University Integrated School, Canossa College, Colegio de San Agustin – Biñan, College of the Holy Spirit Manila, De La Salle University Integrated School, De La Salle Santiago Zobel School, Espiritu Santo Parochial School of Manila, Inc., Immaculate Heart of Mary College - Parañaque, International School for Better Beginnings, Liceo de San Pablo, Lipa City Science National High School, Negros Occidental National Science High School, Philippine Science High School – Ilocos Region, Main, Central Visayas, and Southern Mindanao campuses, Siena College of Taytay and UP Rural High School.
Approximately 250 high school students and teachers from all over the country are expected to attend the two-day convention which includes seven (7) events namely: EKONOMIKA Quiz Contest, Intellectual Encounter Debate Competition, Essay-writing Competition, Poster-Making Competition, Impromptu Speaking Competition, Mini Documentary Presentation Contest, and Economics Teachers' Convention (ETC).
Prof. Carl Marc Ramota, Mr. Jan Carlo Punongbayan and Mr. Norman Cualteros are the guest speakers for the whole event. On the first day of the event, Prof. Ramota will be talking about the overview of federalism while Mr. Punongbayan will tackle about its economic implications. Moreover, Mr. Cualteros will discuss the youth and education policies, programs and projects of the Office of Sen. Bam Aquino on the second day of the event.
The event is co-presented by Department of Economics (DE), College of Economics and Management, UPLB. It is also acknowledged by the Department of Education (DepEd) and supported by the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) and World Bank. Furthermore, the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS) endorses the event.
