The Department of Agriculture - Bureau of Agricultural Research (DA-BAR) gathered its scholars in UPLB for an orientation program on Feb. 3 at the Makiling Ballroom of the Student Union Building.
Thirty-nine of 41 scholars taking up BS Agriculture, BS Agricultural Biotechnology, BS Food Technology, and BS Development Communication attended the event.
In his message, Dr. Nicomedes P. Eleazar, director of DA-BAR, emphasized the scholarship program’s aim to extend help to selected UPCAT passers who deserve financial support.
Meanwhile, Dr. Fernando C. Sanchez, Jr., in his message delivered by Dr. Portia G. Lapitan, vice chancellor for academic affairs, emphasized the value of the scholarship and the scholars’ future role in the country. “As scholars you must aspire beyond the passing grade as you are expected to help better Philippines by revolutionizing agriculture,” she said.
DA-BAR provides tuition and miscellaneous fees, book allowance, travel allowance, monthly stipend, field trip funds, thesis allowance, and graduation allowance to its scholars. It also gives incentives to scholars who graduated with honors. The scholarship funds are being managed by the UPLB Foundation, Inc. (UPLBFI).
Also present during the event were Dr. Casiano S. Abrigo, Jr., executive director of UPLBFI; Digna L. Sandoval, head of DA-BAR’s Institutional Development Division; and staff members of UPLB and UPLBFI.
Aside from the scholarships that it offers, DA-BAR also provides significant financial support to UPLB’s research and extension programs. (John Albert Pagunsan, with reports from Juan Paolo Aquino)
