UPLB researcher wins PMCP best paper award
Dr. Edwin P. Alcantara, a researcher at the National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (BIOTECH), won the best oral paper presentation award during the 40th anniversary celebration and convention of the Pest Management Council of the Philippines (PMCP) on May 5-8 at the Hotel Supreme Convention Plaza in Baguio City. Dr. Alcantara heads the Bionformatics and Drug Discovery Program of BIOTECH.
Centennial Graduation live streaming, a success
Despite the heavy downpour and some technical difficulties, the UPLB Centennial Graduation was successfully webcasted by the University's Information Technology Center (ITC) on April 25. The live streaming of the 37th Commencement Exercises was seen not only in the Philippines but in many corners of the world.
Lansigan wins NAST-Hugh Greenwood award
Dr. Felino Lansigan, a professor at the Institute of Statistics (InStat), was given the 2009 National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) Hugh Greenwood Environmental Science Award on April 23. Only the ninth to be given the award, Dr. Lansigan was recognized for his contributions to research on hydrology and water resources in the country.
UPLB produces 1,716 grads; 2 are summa cum laude
On its centennial, UPLB produced 1,716 graduates who were awarded their diplomas in the 37th Commencement Exercises on April 25 at the DL Umali Freedom Park.
UPLB merit promotion announced
Chancellor Luis Rey Velasco issued Memorandum No. 34 on April 1 to announce the faculty and staff promotion for 2009. Chancellor Velasco made the call for promotion after the Department of Budget and Management released the Special Allotment Release Order, authorizing the University to process the merit promotion for faculty and staff effective April 1, 2009 to cover accomplishments for the April 1, 2008-March 31, 2009 period.
