122 CEM freshies complete Math Bridge Program

Some 122 incoming freshies of the College of Economics and Management (CEM) completed the 3-week online Math Bridge Program (BP) held on Aug. 8-31.

It is the third time in which CEM and the UPLB Learning Resource Center (LRC) collaborated in conducting this special skills-enhancement activity.

The program aimed to develop the foundation skills of non-Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) students in calculus before they take MATH 25 or Fundamental Calculus in their first semester.

Non-STEM students do not have pre-calculus courses or subjects in senior high school.

The BP participants came from the three-degree programs of CEM. They underwent intensive training and exercises in calculus to be better equipped with the necessary skills and competency in the subject.

Classes were convened through Google Classroom and videoconferencing applications such as Zoom. The BP used blended online learning, which employs both synchronous and asynchronous learning.

The BP concluded with a recognition ceremony on Aug. 31 via virtual conferencing, with the students being awarded certificates of completion.

LRC Director John Mervin L. Embate expressed his sincerest gratitude to the bridgers for completing this important milestone in their academic journey at the university. He stressed that these successes will be stepping stones to greater heights in the future. He thanked the CEM administration for their proactiveness in supporting their students’ academic endeavors.

In his special message, Dr. Agham C. Cuevas, dean of CEM, congratulated the bridgers for a job well done. He said that they have already overcome their first hurdle as bonafide Iskolar ng Bayan and reminded them to have the same determination and perseverance throughout their stay as CEM students.

Jay-al P. Reyes shared his experience as a BP participant in 2018 and how it helped him adjust physically, mentally, and socially to student life in the university.

He reminded the participants never to underestimate their shortcomings and to let these serve as opportunities for success in the future. Reyes recently graduated (Class of 2022) with a BS Agricultural and Applied Economics and graduated magna cum laude.

Shakira Shane C. Gomez was awarded as the best in math after garnering the highest rating among this year’s bridgers. (Joshua Michael Jonas)
