170 incoming freshies complete UPLB Bridge Program

A total of 170 incoming freshies completed the UPLB Bridge Program (BP) – an annual 3-week skills enhancement activity in mathematics and English, which aims to bridge the gap between the students’ high school exit skills with the entry requirements in UP.

The BP, spearheaded by the UPLB Learning Resource Center, ran from Aug. 8 to 30 and was conducted online. Participants were selected based on their UP College Application or UPCA formula scores, particularly in mathematics and English.

This is the third time the BP was conducted online due to the restrictions brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. Classes were convened through Google Classroom and videoconferencing applications such as Zoom. The BP adopted blended online learning, which uses both synchronous and asynchronous learning.

The English faculty-tutors were from the Department of Humanities of the College and Arts and Sciences (CAS), while the Math faculty-tutors were from the Math Division of the Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Physics, also of CAS.

The English faculty-tutors were: Mariyel Hiyas C. Liwanag, Katherine M. Gonzales, Marc Stanley I. Mozo, and Jacqueline B. Recaña.

The math faculty tutors were: Jcob C. Malaguit, Eleanor B. Gemida, and Ben Paul B. Dela Cruz.

This year’s BP had four English sections and three math sections. The English subject covered basic to advance grammar lessons, literature review, technical writing, and other topics, while math BP focused on pre-calculus topics.

Apart from math and English classes, the bridgers also attended psychosocial classes facilitated by the Guidance Services Specialists of the Office of Counseling and Guidance of the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs (OVCSA). During these classes, the participants were given tips and best strategies to survive UP and were oriented on university rules and regulations and other pertinent information.

The participants also took leadership, integrity, faith, excellence (LIFE) class sessions with youth volunteers from the Every Nation Campus, a youth organization of UPLB.

The BP concluded with a recognition ceremony on Aug 30 via virtual conferencing, where the participants were awarded their certificates of completion.

LRC Director John Mervin L. Embate congratulated the BP completers for a job well done, as he highlighted the need to uphold both honor and excellence as they embark on their journey in the university. He said that the LRC will be there to support and help them in attaining academic excellence.

Dr. Janette H. Malata-Silva, vice chancellor for student affairs, also congratulated the completers and assured them of OVCSA’s support and services. She also thanked the faculty-tutors, guidance services specialists, and the LRC for conducting the activity.

The ceremony also showcased performances in singing, dancing, and poetry from members of the four BP blocs.

Jamlech Iram N. Gojo-Cruz, an alumnus of the BP 2018, gave a testimonial speech during the ceremony.

Gojo-Cruz, who recently graduated with a BS Computer Science degree, magna cum laude, encouraged them to focus on their goals and to do their best during their stay at the university.

Earl Baron M. Almanzor was awarded Best in Math, while Danielle Bianca Louise A. Chua was awarded Best in English. (Joshua Michael Jonas)
