CATL trains UPRHS faculty for blended learning

The Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning (CATL) led a brief training course on using Moodle and Canvas learning management systems (LMS) for 51 faculty members of the UP Rural High School (UPRHS) on June 28-29.

Dr. Lea C. Garcia, head of CATL’s Instructional Materials Production Section, served as training facilitator.

The training’s first session entitled, “Using Moodle LMS for Blended Learning,” was held on June 28. Dr. Nelio C. Altoveros, an associate professor from the Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Physics at the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), presented the fundamentals of Moodle LMS and facilitated a hands-on workshop on using its features in designing courses.

The second session, held on June 29, had the topic “Exploring Canvas LMS” led by Dr. Edmund G. Centeno, CATL director and associate professor at the College of Development Communication. He shared his knowledge and insights on how to maximize Canvas’s unique capabilities.

This was followed by a discussion on setting up blueprint courses and creating quizzes in Canvas, led by Jethro T. Masangkay, an instructor from the Institute of Chemistry, CAS. He engaged with the participants in creating quizzes and various synchronous and asynchronous assessments using the features of Canvas LMS.

Dr. Gregorio Y. Ardales, Jr., principal of UPRHS, concluded the workshop with a message for the participants.

The two-day workshop is part of the UPRHS faculty’s transition to a new LMS. The school has been using Google Classroom for its learning delivery since the University shifted to the remote modality in response to the COVID-19 pandemic minimum health and safety protocols.

The workshop is also in-line with CATL’s expanded mandate of guiding faculty members in using educational technologies for flexible learning following its reorganization from the Interactive Learning Center. (Lea C. Garcia)
