Shantel Anne Nicole Chavez was supposed to graduate last year together with her classmates from Batch 2015, but fate had other plans for this persevering lady.
The momentarily delay surely disappointed Shantel, who had been aiming to finish BS Agricultural Economics with honors. After all, her study habits fit that of a diligent student – reading her lessons in advance, taking down and reviewing her notes, and striving for a perfect class attendance.
But never did she expect that one year later, she will not only earn her university degree but will in fact, finish as the top graduate of UPLB Class of 2020.
Through her experience, this magna cum laude graduating student wants to encourage other people who are losing hope to keep on fighting and doing what they have started.
“Ituloy lang po nila ‘yung ginagawa nila kasi darating din po na maaabot din po nila ‘yung goals nila,” Shantel said during her virtual guesting at the campus-based online radio program called Galing UPLB of Radyo DZLB.
Shantel, together with 1,629 undergraduate and graduate students, will be officially declared as graduates at a virtual graduation ceremony that UPLB will premiere at 9 AM on Aug. 15 via Youtube and Facebook.
This Infanta, Quezon native, a typical UPLB student who de-stresses amid the campus greenery, admits that she already misses the university, having returned to her hometown because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
But Shantel’s next goal might make the campus her home again – to teach at UPLB.
“Since po nung bago po ako mag-college, gusto ko na pong magturo,” she explained.“Kasi iba po ‘yung feeling na nai-inspire mo po ‘yung students mo, tapos malaki po yung part mo sa pag-shape ng mind nila.”
She added that she looks up to her professors at the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics of the College of Economics and Management, who had inspired her to always do her best.
“Pag nakikita ko po kasi na passionate sila sa pagtuturo nila, lalo po akong ginaganahan na aralin yung subject na tinuturo nila,” she noted.
Shantel’s experience shows that life does not always turn out to be the exact way that we want it.
But its plot twist could sometimes be pleasantly surprising and even better, especially for those who never lose hope and continue to persevere. (Jessa Jael S. Arana)
