UPLB MASS MATHEMATCH extends reach, goes nationwide

Math wizards prevail amid new normal in the recently concluded 33rd National Invitational Mathematical Challenge (MATHEMATCH), which goes down in history as the event’s first ever online and nationwide iteration.

The UPLB Mathematical Sciences Society (UPLB MASS), anchored by its mission to promote deeper appreciation and wider application of the mathematical sciences, held the event via virtual conference, broadcasted live on its official Facebook page on Oct. 23.

“With the pandemic forcing students to shift to online learning, the Society took the opportunity to extend the reach of the competition by maximizing our resources and taking advantage of technology to make the competition executable,” said Erika Dumago, vice president for scholastics division of the UPLB MASS.

Aiming to reach schools all over the country, UPLB MASS undertook efforts for the event to be recognized by the central office and various regional offices of the Department of Education, the UP Office of the Vice President, the UPLB Office of the Chancellor, the Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Physics, and different corporate sponsors.

Eric Roy Favenir, president of UPLB MASS, emphasized that MATHEMATCH is more than just a competition but a forum of mathematics students and aggregation of like-minded individuals who have great aspirations to create a better tomorrow not only for themselves, but also for the Filipino people, through the use of the mathematical sciences.

From 60 students who participated in the preliminary round last Oct. 16, the top 15 participants advanced to the final round where Ma. Ailah Jolie M. Diccion of San Bartolome High School emerged as the champion, followed by Glyza Isabel B. Olesco of Kingfisher School of Business and Finance, and Alexis S. Alim of Legazpi National High School.

The judges of MATHEMATH were Dr. Neil Jerome A. Egarguin, Dr. Eduardo O. Jatulan, and Lynie Dimasuay, faculty members at the Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Physics of the UPLB College of Arts and Sciences.

UPLB MASS plans to continue with its endeavor to widen the reach of MATHEMATCH to more high school students nationwide and establish it as a yearly tradition. (UPLB MASS)
