Metrobank Foundation Inc. celebrates Los Baños’ environmental crusader, Dr. Decibel Faustino-Eslava

Los Baños, Laguna— The UPLB School of Environmental Science and Management (SESAM), in coordination with the Metrobank Foundation, Inc. (MBFI), recognized and celebrated the contributions and accomplishments of Professor and former dean of the School of Environmental Science and Management (SESAM), Dr. Decibel V. Faustino-Eslava, who was named one of the 2024 Metrobank Foundation Outstanding Filipino Teachers.

The recognition was held at the Presentation Ceremony and Public Lecture at the REDREC Auditorium of the College of Economics and Management on December 4, 2024.

The event highlighted UPLB’s transformative vision in higher education and the Metrobank Foundation’s commitment to social responsibility. It also emphasized the two institutions’ shared values of public service and community development.

In his opening message, UPLB Chancellor Jose V. Camacho, Jr. expressed his gratitude to MBFI for recognizing and honoring exemplary educators. Camacho described Eslava as a beacon of hope and inspiration, lauding her academic achievements and her unwavering dedication to applying research for societal benefit. “Today, we celebrate not just her accomplishments but the collective pride she brings to UPLB and the nation.”

The president of the Metrobank Foundation, Inc., Aniceto M. Sobrepeña, highlighted their ongoing commitment to education, excellence, integrity, and service to the country.

Sobrepeña emphasized the foundation’s shared values, including excellence, service, and integrity, and expressed hope for continued partnership with UPLB.

He underscored the critical role of educators in shaping the nation’s future, emphasizing that “a heart that serves is at the core of what we do.”

In this ceremony, Sobrepeña and MBFI Executive Vice President Philip Francisco U. Dy also presented a plaque of recognition to UPLB for Dr. Eslava’s distinction. The plaque was received by UPLB Chancellor Camacho, together with Dr. Charina Gracia B. Banaay, assistant to the vice chancellor for academic affairs; SESAM Dean Rico C. Ancog; and the awardee, Dr. Eslava.

Championing climate action through education

Dr. Eslava’s work extends deeply into disaster risk reduction and management, environmental geology, and smart agriculture. But, it is her fervent advocacy to integrate climate literacy into educational frameworks that truly distinguishes her.

During her lecture entitled, “Teacher Teacher, Paano Kang May Magagawa? The Role of Educators in the National Action for Climate Empowerment (ACE) Strategy,” she passionately stated, “Climate change is the defining issue of our time. If we know little about something, we cannot act on it.”

Her call to action urged that climate change education must become a fundamental aspect of the K-12 curriculum, complemented by localized educational materials and empowered teachers.

She urged, “Awareness is not enough; it must lead to action. ” She advocated partnerships at all levels of society to enhance climate education accessibility.

Insights from a fellow visionary

The awarding ceremony also featured insights from Dr. Virginia Cuevas, a former UPLB faculty member who received the Metrobank Foundation Outstanding Filipino Teacher award in 2008.

Cuevas, a Professor Emeritus at the university and a distinguished expert in plant ecology and mycology reflected on her journey, likening her award to a challenge to persist in her public service efforts.

Dr. Cuevas recalled how stressful the final interview was during the search for awardees in 2008. She said that winning the award made her more determined to pursue her advocacy and passion to do research, and to excel in matters she most believes in.

“It was an affirmation that what I am involved in, the values, efforts, and my philosophy in life are righteous and are appreciated by people. This award inspired me to do more and give my best throughout my professional life”, said Dr. Cuevas.

At 75, she continues to inspire others through her dedication, reminding attendees that recognition brings both appreciation and a responsibility to motivate others.

Beyond the Recognition

For Dr. Eslava, her recent accolade validates her efforts and challenges her to continue her journey as a public servant.

“This recognition strengthens my resolve to continue my profession as a public servant. It’s not just about individual success—it’s about inspiring others to pursue meaningful work and making a difference,” she said.

As the event drew to a close, it was evident that both Eslava and Cuevas exemplified the transformative power of education and service.
Their respective journeys inspire a call to action for educators and researchers to leverage their expertise for the greater good to help build a brighter future for the Philippines. (Dhannielle Grace C. Bernardo and Rosemarie Laila D. Areglado-Dimasuay)
