Univ Library conducts 15th info literacy program

The UPLB Main Library and the College/Unit Libraries continue to equip students with knowledge and skills to better access and understand information through the Information Literacy Program (ILP): Level UP Your Research.

ILP’s 15th edition  gathered together 421 students in various sessions from Sept. 3 to 13.

These ILP sessions reoriented the participants about library services and resources and taught them how to search information using online databases.

Students were also taught citing and referencing with the help of the software Mendeley, and checking plagiarism and originality using another software, Turnitin.

The 15th ILP also featured special sessions on new topics that reflected the ever-evolving field of information literacy.

First is the session on inclusivity, diversity, equity, and access (IDEA)  entitled “Library amidst diversity: ensuring equitable and access and inclusive learning spaces.” It sought to raise awareness about IDEA in the library setting and in the context of community engagement and participation.

Another session called “Scholarly communication: ethics and issues for researchers and students” talked about open access and institutional repositories.

ILP also discussed ways to maximize the use of  mobile applications in studying and learning through the session, “study and learn the millennials’ way!: introducing mobile apps.”

Timely topics on disinformation and cybercrime completed ILP’s new line-up.

The session on “Fake news and information disorder: an essential guide for digital natives” highlighted the types, applications, and examples  of misinformation and disinformation. Students were taught how to spot disinformation and how such might have been interpreted by the audience.

Meanwhile, the session entitled “Learn how to protect yourself against cybercrime” discussed the types and motives of cybercrimes, and the ways to avoid falling prey to cybercriminals.

During ILP’s kick-off activity on Sept. 3 at the Main Library lobby, BM Gonzalez Hall, students registered on their selected sessions before enjoying games, prizes, and freebies. Award-winning documentary films were also shown in the evening part of the event.
