UPLB creates history as the first winner of the inaugural Hack4AProgress

A team of students from the UPLB Institute of Computer Science (ICS) composed of John Robertson Despi, Kenneth Renz Tegrado, Mark Henry Alcantara, and Vincent Arellano won first place in the inaugural Hack4AProgress hackathon organized by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Calabarzon.

The team was mentored and supervised by ICS faculty member Reginald Neil Recario.

The hackathon, which aimed to foster smarter and more sustainable solutions, sought innovative approaches to address challenges faced by local government units (LGUs) in Santa Rosa City, Laguna, and Carmona City, Cavite. This effort aligned with the event’s theme, “Hack4AProgress: Creating Innovative Solutions to Address Local Government Challenges.”

The UPLB team, named “konek.dev,” developed Agapay, a comprehensive data management and decision-making platform designed to bridge gaps in decentralized healthcare systems. The platform enables seamless data sharing and coordination, ensuring patients receive continuous care across multiple treatment facilities and locations.

Anchored on the DOST Calabarzon 2024 Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation Week (RSTIW) celebration in October to be held in Carmona City, Cavite, the Hack4AProgress highlighted the power of young minds to tackle pressing social issues through practical and innovative solutions.

The event also emphasized the importance of collaboration between educational and research institutions and LGUs in driving meaningful community change.

Students and professionals from various institutions participated in this hackathon held on September 23-25, 2024 at Sol Y Viento in Calamba, Laguna.

Angel G. Mutia from the UPLB Technology Transfer and Business Development Office (TTBDO) also served as a mentor during the event. (Angel G. Mutia, Cathrene P. Amante)
