UPLB installs 15th READY BATINGAW at CEM

The UPLB Security and Safety Office (SSO) marked another milestone in disaster preparedness with the launch of the 15th READY BATINGAW on May 29, 2025, at the College of Economics and Management (CEM).

Special Police Assistant Chief Jonathan D. Maliwat explained the use of the BATINGAW in disaster risk reduction, consistent with initiatives that promote SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions).

Made from recycled materials, BATINGAW promotes environmental sustainability while serving as a manual emergency warning system.

Quoting United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, “Every person on earth must be protected by early warning systems by 2027,” Maliwat underscored the urgency of disaster preparedness.

SSO Deputy Director Percival Henry M. Balite emphasized the BATINGAW’s practical use, citing its critical role during an earthquake on May 27. With its use, an evacuation alert was sent to the UPLB personnel. The system remains an essential tool for campus emergency response.

Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Agham Cuevas expressed his deep appreciation for the installation of BATINGAW at CEM, recognizing its vital role in strengthening campus safety and preparedness.

The CEM BATINGAW, generously donated by Dr. Marco A. Galang and his family, reinforces UPLB’s commitment to resilience. Dr. Galang shared his family’s connection to CEM and pledged continued support for security initiatives.

CEM Dean Maria Angeles Catelo expressed gratitude to the donors and emphasized the college’s dedication to fostering a culture of disaster preparedness.

The event concluded with the ceremonial unveiling of BATINGAW and picture-taking with university officials, donors, faculty, staff, and students. The SSO is under the leadership of lawyer and faculty member Eric Paul D. Peralta. (Grizelda Penales-Marza)
