The UPLB Security and Safety Office (SSO), in collaboration with the Department of Human Kinetics (DHK) of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), launched the first of the UPLB READY BATINGAW alternative alarm devices for 2025 on January 28 at the E.B. Copeland Gymnasium.
This initiative, like the other 11 that were launched in 2024, reflects collective action and shared responsibility in enhancing campus safety.
The alternative emergency alarm devices were donated by DHK faculty members and the Williams family.
Key figures at the launch who attended and expressed support for the undertaking included Percival Henry Balite, SSO deputy director; Dean Chrysline Margus Piñol of CAS, and Virgilio Marilag, chair of DHK.
SSO Special Police Assistant Chief Jonathan Maliwat, the innovator of the UPLB READY BATINGAW, discussed its evolution and objectives. He said that the device aligns with United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDG) 11, 16, and 17. It is a response to the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction’s (UNDRR) “Early Warnings for All” initiative, which aims to protect everyone with early warning systems by 2027. (Kristine Bernadette T.
