UPLB SSO holds active shooter preparedness webinar

The Security and Safety Office (SSO) of the Vice Chancellor for Community Affairs held the virtual learning session, “Preventing and Preparing for an Active Shooter and Shooting Incident Inside the Campus,” to understand the principles and concepts of handling such a situation.

Special Police Assistant Chief Jonathan D. Maliwat, section chief of the Crisis and Emergency Response Unit (CERU) of the SSO, introduced the three speakers, namely: Atty. Kristoffer James E. Purisima, Capt. Sherhannah S. Paiso and Retired Major General Leocadio SC. Santiago, Jr.

Atty. Purisima, a former deputy administrator of the Office of Civil Defense, discussed the national government response policies on active shooter and shooting incidents.

The second speaker was Capt. Paiso, military professor and psychologist of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, discussed the psychology and pre-attack behavior of an active shooter.

Gen. Santiago, on the other hand, tackled how to prepare and respond to an active shooting situation. Gen. Santiago is a former director of operations of the Philippine National Police. He belonged to the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) Class of 1979 and is the current dean of the College of Criminology of the Philippine Christian University.

The webinar was attended by 81 faculty members, researchers, administrative staff, and security personnel of UPLB.

Chancellor Jose V. Camacho, Jr. delivered an inspiring message emphasizing the importance of the event and of being prepared in times of crisis.

Also present was Vice Chancellor for Community Affairs Roberto Cereno, who delivered the welcome remarks. The program was officially opened by Dr. Mark Dondi Arboleda, officer in charge of the SSO.  (Alva Marie Tirones)
