The College of Arts and Sciences is the center of education in the basic sciences, humanities, liberal arts, and foundation courses in UPLB.

CAS is composed of nine units, namely: the Institute of Biological Sciences (IBS), Institute of Chemistry (IC), Institute of Computer Science (ICS), Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Physics (IMSP), Institute of Statistics (INSTAT), Department of Humanities (DHUM), Department of Social Sciences (DSS), Department of Human Kinetics (DHK), and UP Rural High School (UPRHS). It houses twelve (12) degree program offerings.

Highlights

IBS, IC, and IMSP were declared as National Centers of Excellence in the Basic Sciences by virtue of Executive Order No. 889 on March 23, 1983. On November 23, 2015, IBS, ICS, and INSTAT were recognized as Centers of Excellence by CHED. The BS Biology Program passed the ASEAN University Network-Quality Assurance assessment on February 18, 2014. It is the first undergraduate program of UPLB to pass such international accreditation.

Research

The CAS faculty and staff engage in various research endeavors in areas including conservation and sustainability, habitat restoration, resources assessment, vulnerability assessment, diversity, social media, agriculture as an industry, agricultural insurance, cardio fitness, disaster risk and reduction management, S&T-based social enterprise development, and social science research, among others.

Public Service

The College strongly believes that future leaders need programs that could make an impact in the world. It is thus promoting new and ongoing extension programs. IHNF continues its banner program, Barangay Integrated Development Approach for Nutrition Improvement (BIDANI) and its Nutrition Clinic and Lactation Clinic. DCERP developed the TAP-HSP or the Technical Assistance Program in Human Settlements Planning, the public service arm of the department providing technical assistance to local government units and communities in crafting risk-sensitive development plans. Through the TAP-HSP, new BSHE graduates are exposed to and trained in handling actual planning experiences. DSDS is implementing S&T Community-Based Program for Inclusive Development (STC4iD) which aims to establish a sustainable and resilient AANR-based S&T community livelihood and to promote inclusive development to men and women in the different project sites. DHFDS has launched the Families of Children with Exceptionalities Resource Center (FaCES), and continues to offer the Children Development Laboratory (CDL), Day Care Laboratory (DCL), Day Care Resource Center (DCRC). The department also facilitates an extension initiative for the youth through the The Pintig Adolescent Development and Psychosocial Support Program. They also provide services for the elderly through the Elderly Development Program (EDP)
