UPLB hosts annual ‘friendship games’ with CLSU

The lush and green Mount Makiling serves as the backdrop of this year’s UPLB-Central Luzon State University (CLSU) Friendship Games. This is because UPLB is the host of the annual athletic competition with the Nueva Ecija-based university.

More than 600 athletes from the two state universities take part in various sports events, such as arnis, athletics, badminton, baseball, basketball, billiards, bowling, chess, football, futsal, lawn tennis, slo-pitch softball, softball, table tennis, beach volleyball, and regular volleyball. The sports fest opened on July 26 at the Copeland Gymnasium and will continue until July 28.

First held in the 1980s, this year’s edition is the fifth since it was revived in 2013. According to Benjamin D. Arizala, a member of the Sports and Recreation Committee that spearheads the event, the UPLB-CLSU Friendship games aims to provide a venue for the student athletes to play alongside their counterparts outside their campuses. It also helps them measure their performance before they compete in other regional and national sports events and to promote strong relations between the two universities.

Present during the opening ceremony was Dr. Melissa E. Agulto, vice president for academic affairs of CLSU, who represented Dr. Tereso A. Abella, president. (Jessa Jael S. Arana)
