UPLB orients student organizations

Representatives from over 100 UPLB student organizations attended the annual “org” orientation by the Student Organizations and Activities Division of the Office of Student Affairs (SOAD-OSA). It was held at the Makiling Ballroom, Student Union Building on Sept. 4. The event, titled “Student Orgs’ Ultimate Leap (SOUL),” covered topics on student conduct and leadership.

Chancellor Fernando C. Sanchez, Jr. emphasized during his inspirational message that aside from providing support to students while studying at the University, student organizations are also crucial in developing overall student values and mobilizing relevant student activities in UPLB.

The orientation was divided into five topics, namely: University Rules and Regulations, a discussion on the guidelines for student conduct and the role of the Student Disciplinary Tribunal (SDT), led by Atty. Eleno O. Peralta, chair of the SDT; and Gender Sensitivity and Student Orgs, which clarified the scope and definition of sexual harassment and how students can report such incidents, led by Dr. Bella C. Cruzana, director of the UPLB Gender Center.

Other topics were the importance of community service and partnership opportunities between the Ugnayan ng Pahinungod and student organizations as discussed by Pahinungod Research Associate Mark Salas; tips and know-hows in practical leadership, by Francis “Kiko” Faulve, ABS-CBN news reporter; and solid-waste management and maintaining a green campus by Engr. Donny Rey Camus from the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Community Affairs.

Present during the event were Dr. Nina M. Cadiz, director of OSA, who delivered the welcome remarks; Alvin Constantino, director of the Confederate Sentinels Group, Inc., who introduced the Student Orgs Awards and Recognition (SOAR); and Jickerson P. Lado, head of SOAD and master of ceremonies. (Jessa Jael S. Arana)
