CAFS honors achievers, founders at 109th anniv

The College of Agriculture and Food Science (CAFS) remained faithful to its tradition of honoring excellence, service, and history on its 109th Foundation Day with the theme “CAFS: Converging innovations in agriculture and food science.”

In a recognition program on March 6 at the ASH Lobby, eight personnel and research and extension teams from the College were given the Nelia T. Gonzalez Award of Excellence for being the best in their fields.

Dr. Rommel Sulabo (Institute of Animal Science) was hailed as Outstanding Teacher; while Dr. Antonio Lalusin (Institute of Crop Science) and Dr. Apolonio Ocampo (Institute of Plant Breeding or IPB) were given the Outstanding Researcher awards. Dr. Lalusin is one of UPLB’s Outstanding Researchers for 2018.

Loreta Del Mundo (National Crop Protection Center or NCPC), Rizalina Tiongco, and Saturnino de Mesa (both IPB) were named Outstanding Administrative Staff for office personnel, technician, and blue collar personnel categories, respectively.

CAFS Outstanding Research Team: Fruit and Shoot Borer Resistant Eggplant Research Team of the Institute of Plant Breeding


The Fruit and Shoot Borer Resistant Eggplant Research Team of IPB and the NCPC Quick Response Team, on the other hand, did not only bag the CAFS’ honors; it was also hailed as UPLB’s best team.

CAFS Outstanding Extension Team: National Crop Protection Center Quick Response Team

CAFS also recognized its honor students for the 2nd Sem AY 2016-2017 and 1st Sem AY 2017-2018; the topnotchers of the November 2017 Licensure Exam for Agriculturist;  its eight new UP Scientists for 2017-2019; and the 39 employees who recently retired from the University.

“The recognition and honor that we give to you is not due to a solitary achievement or discovery. Rather, we recognize the dedication, the diligence, and the hard work which you all poured into your respective endeavors,” said Chancellor Fernando C. Sanchez, Jr. in a message that he gave1.

Dr. Ruben L. Villareal, former UPLB chancellor, relayed the message of guest speaker Dr. Nelia T. Gonzalez, former UP Alumni Regent, to the CAFS community: to continuously love UPLB as a whole and to keep helping one another. Dr. Villareal, together with his batch mates from UPCA Class 1960, donated PhP 100,000 for the College of Agriculture Fund for Emergency Loan (CAFEL).

A few hours prior to the recognition program, the CAFS constituents paid tribute to its founders at Pook Pinagtatagan in Brgy. Timugan, Los Banos, the foundation site of UPLB-CAFS. It was the place where the pioneering professors and students of the College he1ld their first classes using tents.

Chancellor Sanchez, in his message, called on the UPLB-CAFS to hone a culture of innovation. “UPCA’s founders envisioned the College to be at the forefront of the latest developments in the field, and at the same time, as a public service institution that would always act in the interests of the people,” he said.

Present during both events were National Scientist Dolores Ramirez; Dr. Enrico P. Supangco, dean of CAFS; Dr. Domingo E. Angeles, former dean; and the officials of CAFS. National Scientist Ricardo Lantican and former UP Mindanao chancellor Rogelio Cuyno, also attended the program.

Gracing the commemoration program were For. Leo Ballesfin, president of the UPLB Alumni Association; Hon. Caesar Perez, mayor of Los Baños; guest speaker and CAFS alumna Rosemarie D. Caalam, vice president and RBU head of Jollibee Foods Corporation; and other UPLB officials.

The UP College of Agriculture was created by the UP Board of Regents on March 6, 1909. It became UP Los Baños in 1972, and had the College of Agriculture as one of its first few colleges.
