Organic agriculture edifice to rise in UPLB

A new building will soon rise in the University in support of the Organic Agriculture Program (OAP) of the Agricultural Systems Institute, College of Agriculture and Food Science (CAFS-ASI).

The Organic Agriculture Research, Development and Extension Center (OARDEC), as it will be known, will house research, development, and extension efforts in organic agriculture. Its groundbreaking ceremony took place on March 21 at the Central Experiment Station, UPLB.

Dr. Blesilda M. Calub, program leader of OAP and University Researcher at ASI, said that the building will not only serve as a research facility, but also as a training facility for farmers, students, researchers from other agencies, and the general public. “It can be an open-door classroom and can be used for students’ thesis research. They can hold their laboratory lessons and classes here,” she added.

The Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Agricultural Research (DA-BAR)has provided PhP 5.5M for the building. UPLB complemented it with an allocation of PhP 500,000.

Present during the ceremony were Chancellor Fernando C. Sanchez, Jr.; Digna L. Sandoval, head of the Institutional Development Division of DA-BAR; Dr. Pearl B. Sanchez, director of ASI; Dr. Casiano S. Abrigo, Jr. and Rolando P. Orozco, executive director and project development officer, respectively, of the UPLB Foundation Inc.; and Arch. Charlie E. Dela Tonga, contracted architect and builder of the project. (Jessa Jael S. Arana)
