UPLB to launch a book on Mount Makiling Forest Reserve

Good news for those who wish to understand the dynamics between upland community development and natural resource management in Mount Makiling!

A book entitled “Science-based management and upland community development in the Philippines: The case of Mount Makiling Forest Reserve (MMFR)” will soon be available with its launching on Apr. 18, 1:30 PM, during the 108th founding anniversary of the College of Forestry and Natural Resources at the Nicolas P. Lansigan Auditorium, CFNR, in UPLB.

It is edited by Dr. Portia G. Lapitan, lead author, professor of forestry, and vice chancellor for academic affairs of UPLB.

The book consolidates the findings on biophysical resources of the MMFR as communities grow within and around the mountain through time. According to Dr. Lapitan, this is the first attempt to synthesize a number of researches about Mount Makiling, where significant scientific investigations have been conducted as early as the 1900s.

It focuses on how the research findings can be harnessed to contribute to the inclusive growth of upland farm communities while maintaining the ecological integrity of the mountain. It aims to contribute to the development of a management and conservation plan for MMFR.

Featured in the book are articles written by UPLB faculty members and researchers, namely: For. Nicasio M. Balahadia, Prof. Juancho B. Balatibat, Dr. Nathaniel C. Bantayan, For. Corazon A. Calimag, Dr. Manuel L. Castillo, Dr. Priscila C. Dolom, Prof. Pamela Joyce M. Eleazar, For. Agnes M. Mora, Dr. Nelson M. Pampolina, Atty. Eleno O. Peralta, Dr. Juan M. Pulhin, and Dr. Teodoro R. Villanueva.

Science-based management and upland community development in the Philippines: The case of Mount Makiling Forest Reserve” is funded by the Department of Agriculture – Bureau of Agricultural Research (DA-BAR) through the UPLB Foundation, Inc. It is published by the University of the Philippines Press, the first university press in the country and the official publishing house of the UP System. (Agnes M. Mora)
