New GS dorm breaks ground

To answer the increasing population of the Graduate School (GS), UPLB is now building a new dormitory for its graduate students.

The soon-to-rise GS dorm is being built along Jose R. Velasco Avenue, on an incline past Faculty Village and before reaching the UPCO housing.

It can house around 200 students and will have a student lounge, an exhibit gallery, a meeting room, a bookstore, a computer room, and a commercial stall. The top floor will also have a view deck and a fitness gym.

During the groundbreaking ceremony on March 6, Chancellor Fernando C. Sanchez, Jr. expressed the importance of providing graduate students with living spaces that are accessible, comfortable, inspiring, and safe.

Present during the event were Senator Juan Miguel “Migz” Zubiri, UP President Danilo L. Concepcion, GS Dean Dr. Jose Camacho, Jr., and other officials from UP System and UPLB.

GS staff and students also attended the event.

The building is funded under the General Appropriations Act through the Department of Public Works and Highways.

It is expected to be completed by 2020. (John Glen S. Sarol)
