Agriculture takes center stage in 18th UP ComBroadSoc Gandingan Awards

On its 18th year, the UP ComBroadSoc Gandingan Awards will recognize national, local, and online media on May 4, 2024, at the Charles Fuller Baker Memorial Hall in the University of the Philippines Los Baños. The awards program is themed “Agrikultura: Mga Kuwento ng Hamon at Pag-asa.”

Abangan ang muling pagdagundong. Para sa agrikultura.

First given away in 2007, Gandingan Awards remains the only student organization-led and university-based award-giving program focusing on development-oriented media work and personalities.

Winners will be selected from 200 entries submitted this year by 28 media networks and platforms. The winners should best capture, through stories, the pressing problems faced by farmers, fisherfolk, and other concerned groups and how these affect the overall agricultural landscape in the country.

UP Community Broadcasters’ Society (UP ComBroadSoc), the award-giving body, is a media-oriented socio-civic student organization at the University of the Philippines Los Baños.

The organization has received entries highlighting the call of farmers for genuine agrarian reform and fair compensation, the looming concern over food security and the increasing prices of agricultural commodities, as well as the struggles of fishers and foresters against deforestation, overfishing, territorial disputes, and the depletion of natural resources.

The awarding ceremony will feature performances from Filipino talents such as Talahib People’s Music, UPLB Sandayaw Cultural Group, and Harmonya: The String Ensemble of UPLB. UPLB Talent Pool members will also be giving performances at the event.

Through the Gandingan Awards, UP ComBroadSoc continuously encourages media practitioners to focus on development in their reporting for the betterment of the lives of the Filipino people.

Limited seats for the audience at the awarding program will be available for sale soon. Proceeds will go to a public service activity with Pambansang Kilusan ng mga Samahang Magsasaka or PAKISAMA, a 35-year-old national movement and confederation of family farmer organizations.
