OCG-OVCSA coaches graduates, students on making career choices

The Office of Counseling and Guidance (OCG) of the UPLB Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs (OVCSA) is conducting the 4th UPLB Career Convention to guide graduating and senior high school or SHS students, those seeking practicum sites, and graduates in making their career choices. 

Through the various activities it is holding, the convention, themed “Future Proofing and Empowering Your Career Choices,” aims to help them contemplate the career pathways that they wish to take and the options they possess.

The Convention consists of a series of online and face-to-face activities. The online event premiered on the OCG-OVCSA FB page on July 12 with the topic “Unlocking your Career Potential: In-Demand Employability Skills Employers Value Most” with Mae Ezra Abundo as the resource speaker.  The online events will be done every month all year round while the face-to-face activities were held on Aug. 2-4 at the Student Union building.

The Opening Program, held on Aug. 2, had the members of the OVCSA Executive Committee in attendance. Engr. Marc Immanuel Isip, the assistant to the vice chancellor for student affairs, gave the opening remarks on behalf of Dr. Janette A. Malata-Silva, vice chancellor for student affairs while Dr. Jea Agnes Buera, OCG director, gave the closing remarks. 

A webinar was also conducted on Aug. 2 with the topic “Career Exploration: Alumni Experiences, Expectations, and Endeavors in Their Chosen Careers.” 

The webinar speakers were Leah De Guzman, communications manager of East-West Seed; Divine Krizza Cruz, assistant professor at the Department of Economics and Management, College of Economics and Management; Adriel Alfred Palomar, chief executive officer and president of RTWater; Prince Ian Jervis Malleta, nutritionist-dietician at the Provincial Government of Laguna; and Leonardo Barua, university extension specialist at the Makiling Center for Mountain Ecosystems. 

The Career Fair, held on Aug. 2-4, featured face-to-face interactions with representatives of different companies. 

On Aug. 3, a seminar was held with the topic “Pre-Employment Seminars: Knowing Your Rights and Privileges.” The speakers were Marie Louise R. Luzuriaga, junior communication analyst at the Social Security System; Melvin R. Casabal, marketing specialist at Pag-IBIG fund; and Aileen Devera, social insurance assistant representative at Philhealth.

On the same day, Hazel Jane M. Pangan, administrative officer of the Civil Service Commission, discussed “Civil Service Commission: what you need to know when working in the government.” 

A webinar will be held on the morning of Aug. 16 on “Pursuing Graduate Studies: A Gateway to Sustainable Career Advancement” with medical consultant Dr. Che Manalansan as the resource speaker. In the afternoon of the same day, another webinar will be held with Sheryll Edd P. Hermosa-Ebron of the Learning Resource Center of OVCSA speaking on “Personality Development and Professional Growth” and Aivan Karl Parducho of Pru Life UK on “Financial Literacy.” The webinar will be streamed on the OCG-OVCSA FB page.

A number of companies participated in the career convention to promote, share their career opportunities, and connect to the participants.
