Dr. Chris Thorogood advocates for field botany as the best career choice

Dr. Chris Thorogood, deputy director and head of science at the University of Oxford Botanic Garden and a visiting professor at the College of Forestry and Natural Resources (CFNR), gave a thought-provoking discussion on why field botany is the best career choice one can make.

On his third visit to UPLB, he gave a lecture at the inaugural seminar series of the CFNR on February 27, 2024, at the Nicolas P. Lansigan Auditorium, where he showcased the myriad opportunities inherent in a career in botany.

Dr. Thorogood was part of a team from UPLB that reinstated a Rafflesia in the country in 2023. The Rafflesia is a species renowned for having the largest flowers in the world.

He talked about the global community of botanists and the significance of collaborative research initiatives. Drawing from his experiences in exploring the world’s flora, including encounters with remarkable giant flowers, he underscored the excitement and fulfillment that is inherent in botanical exploration.

He also highlighted his collaborations with Southeast Asian botanists, including Prof. Pastor L. Malabrigo, Jr., and For. Adriane B. Tobias from the Department of Forest Biological Sciences (DFBS), CFNR-UPLB.

These collaborations highlight the importance of cross-cultural partnerships in botanical research.

With a research focus spanning biomimetics and evolutionary biology, Dr. Thorogood’s global expeditions in pursuit of botanical discoveries illuminate the dynamic field of field botany. Notably, Dr. Thorogood’s talents also extend beyond scientific research, as evidenced by his proficiency in botanical illustration showcased in his publications catering to diverse audiences.

Students actively engaged with Dr. Thorogood throughout the seminar, posing insightful questions during the Q&A session. CFNR organized the seminar series in collaboration with DFBS and the Office of the Coordinator for Research, Extension and Linkages (OCREL). (Adriane B. Tobias)
