Nagoya U campus in UPLB adds eng’g and envi studies to its transnat’l PhD programs

The University of the Philippines (UP) and Nagoya University (NU) signed a new Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) to add two more fields of study to the transnational doctoral programs offered by the NU Asian Satellite Campus (NUASC-PH) in UPLB.

UP President Angelo A. Jimenez and NU President Naoshi Sugiyama led the signing ceremony between the two institutions on Oct. 9 at the UP headquarters in Diliman, Quezon City.

The new agreement adds two NU graduate schools, the Graduate School of Engineering (GSE) and the Graduate School of Environmental Studies (GSES), to offer doctoral programs in selected fields of engineering and environmental studies through the NUASC-PH.

Earlier this year, on Feb. 21, Jimenez, with the UPLB delegation, signed the renewal of the NUASC-PH hosting agreement at NU’s headquarters in Japan.

The agreement ensures the continuous offering of transnational doctoral programs of NU’s Graduate School of Bioagricultural Sciences (GSBS) and the Graduate School of International Development (GSID) through NUASC-PH in UPLB.

Four new students will be studying the “Transnational Doctoral Programs for Leading Professionals in Asian Countries” of NU. They are Karen Ardez (UPLB), Jimmy Pogosa (Visayas State University), Mark Angelo Abinsay (Department of National Defense), and Merwin Salazar (Senate Economic Planning Office).

After the signing ceremony, the NU delegation proceeded to the UPLB campus where the NU-GSID and the College of Public Affairs and Development (CPAf) formalized its mobility program, the Overseas Fieldwork Program (OFP), at the Office of the Chancellor. The OFP enables NU graduate students to pursue short-term on-site activities with CPAf.

NU-GSID was represented by Dean Aya Okada and UPLB by Chancellor Jose V. Camacho, Jr. Also at the signing ceremony were CPAf Dean Rowena Baconguis and faculty member Evelie Serrano.

Representing the Office of International Linkages were Assoc. Prof. Tonette Laude and Project Development Officer Christian Dimapilis.
The NU delegation also took part in the ninth entrance ceremony of the NU Asian Satellite Campuses Institute (ASCI) in UPLB. (Ana Vera G. Oleta and Maria Rowena Beatrice Inzon)
